ESD heel grounders keep standing and walking personnel safely connected to ground whenever they move through an ESD Protected Area (EPA). Instead of relying on a bench cord like a wrist strap, heel grounders use a conductive rubber cup on the heel and a conductive ribbon that tucks into the shoe or sock, creating a path from the body, through the footwear, to ESD flooring or floor mats. When used correctly, they help keep operators at a safe, controlled potential so they don’t charge up and discharge into static-sensitive assemblies, PCBs, wafers, avionics, or medical device electronics.

In most ESD programs, heel grounders are the primary grounding method for standing work, material handling, and walking between workstations, and are often required by internal ESD procedures alongside compliant flooring and regular tester checks. Many facilities use a two-foot (dual) heel grounder setup for more reliable contact as the operator walks, especially in high-risk electronics and aerospace environments.
