A poorly constructed gowning space can make following clean room protocol and procedures a challenge. While there are several factors that contribute to an efficient gowning space, there are three major areas that should be broken down.

Pre-Gowning Area

Located immediately outside of the gowning room is what is known as the pre-gowning area. Clean room personnel are usually provided with a locker to store personal items such as clothing, cell phones and jewelry upon entering the actual gowning room. On occasion, a motorized shoe cleaner and an automatic contamination-control mat can be found in the pre-gowning area. These devices provide an extra layer of sanitation by removing particles and stubborn contaminants on your shoes.

Sterile Gowning Area (Dirty)

When entering the sterile gowning area, most employees will still be dressed in their street clothes, so it’s important to designate areas for both pre and post-gowning routines. By establishing clear and noticeable pre and post-gowning sections, you can decrease the likelihood of non-gowned personnel accidently walking into your sterilized area.

To make the gowning process easier on employees, the sterile gowning area should include lean rails or gowning benches to help workers balance themselves while stepping into coveralls or other disposable garments. A specialty gowning platform is helpful to provide as well, and serves as a contaminate-free surface for employees to dress without having to worry about their garments touching a contaminated floor.

Sterile Gowning Area (Clean)

At the end of the gowning process after both booties have been pulled over your shoes, it’s now safe to move to the clean side of the gowning area. On this side of the gowning room, it’s helpful to hang a poster displaying a properly garbed model for employees to use for reference. It is also a good idea to hang a mirror to allow personnel to self-inspect themselves before entering the clean room.
